Happy Diwali Everyone !

DIWALI – One of the most celebrated, decorated, delicious festivals celebrated by Indians. And I might add most noisy of them all.

Diwali (also called Deepavali) is festival of lights, which symbolizes the Victory of Good over evil and light over darkness. usually lasting for 5 days, the festival involves

  • lots of decorations,
  • loads of sweet and savory dishes,
  • Show off of new clothes,
  • lines of illuminations both interior and exterior,
  • range of Rangoli(colorful drawings),
  • bags and boxes of firecrackers.

Yes, most or all of the above are done in many Indian households. That’s the grandness of Diwali!

Homemade Indian Sweets – MysorePak, Boondi Laddu, Pesara(Green gram sunnundalu), Carrot Halwa, Murukku, Peanut Chikki

Depending on who you ask, you can hear different stories of why we celebrate Diwali.

In North – It is believed that on this day Lord Rama returned to his people after 14 years of exile during which he fought and won a battle against the demons and the demon king, Ravana.

South India – Lord Krishna’s wife Satyabhama killed the demon God- Narakasura. The celebration is called ‘Naraka Chathurdasi’ which is celebrated one day before Diwali. On the festival day, we celebrate by lighting lots of Diyas(lights) to symbolize the victory of Good over evil on Diwali day.

In West – Diwali is considered as start of new year and so it starts with worshipping of Goddess for wealth- “Maa Lakshmi”.

In East – Goddess of Power- Durga is worshipped on this big day. Durga Puja/Kali Puja is the most famous there.

Prepping starts atleast one or two weeks ahead in most households. This year we are celebrating Diwali on November 14 (Saturday). On the day of Diwali, diyas(tealights, oil lights, candles etc) are lit everywhere, sweets are exchanged and enjoyed and the day ends with firecrackers.

While my preparations are still ongoing, I shared some of the pics from previous years. They are simple by many standards but grand by my standards :).

      1. This yr for my daughter Akshara first Deepawali after marriage, so we call that thalai Deepawali . So very grand celebration as she is also blessed with a baby girl.
        Our house is cherished with relatives. Had a fabulous time. 🥰

  9. I love this! Thank you for the details and variations of who/what is celebrated. I like the idea of a Durga and Lakshmi combo to finish out 2020. If they can’t create change, I don’t know who can.
